What can I do?

Now that you've used the previous sections to understand your personal ticket, how do I take care of this?

With the understanding that these options might NOT ALWAYS APPLY to your personal issue, for the majority  of minor traffic and criminal offenses you have a few options open to you:

  • Civil infraction traffic violations such as: speeding, illegal turns, going through a red light, etc. These traffic violations are non-criminal.
  • Misdemeanor traffic violations (which can result in arrest). These violations are criminal in nature and the maximum penalty for crimes in this category is a fine up to $1000 and/or 90 days in jail.

If you are charged with a civil infraction violation, you must respond to the ticket within 14 days from the date the violation was issued.

Your options are:

  • Admit responsibility for the violation. Pay the amount indicated on the ticket within 14 days of the violation being issued. This may be done in person at the court, by mail, or by paying online. Payments made using a credit or debit card in person or online are charged a processing fee.
  • Admit responsibility with an explanation. Request a review of your case with explanation through our Online Case Review system under the Traffic tab. You written explanation must state that you are admitting responsibility and must be signed. A prosecutor will review the ticket and your explanation. You will be notified by email of the prosecutor’s decision.
  • Deny responsibility. Request a hearing for your ticket through our Online Case Review system using the Traffic Tab.
  • Failure to respond to a civil infraction within the allowed time period will result in the entry of a default judgment against the driver. Points will be placed on the driver’s record and the secretary of state may suspend the driver’s license. Before driving privileges can be restored, it will be necessary to pay the judgment amount as well as any late fees and a mandatory license reinstatement fee.
